Burnt Cookies

Protagonist: Joey Meconi

Point of view: First person

Person vs. person

“Ah.” The first day of summer, what a relief, no more getting up early or doing homework. It was a nice day very hot and sunny, very humid it was making me sweat almost. Our house got very hot in the summer and we had no fans to cool the air. My mom called me for breakfast and by the smell I could tell it was bacon and eggs. I went in to eat and my mom had left for work. She worked at the local grocery store. I thought of what I’d do today while I laid on the couch watching sports. My grandma lived close by so I thought I’d go and see her and maybe she’d make some cookies. My mom wasn’t into baking but she was a good cook. I got my bike out of the garage and hadn’t ridden it since last summer. The sun was in my eyes as I went to my grandma’s. As I arrived I could smell cookies as I did every time I came to her house. I could smell chocolate chip cookies and rushed inside.

“Why hello Joey, I wasn’t expecting you today.” My grandma said. “Yea, I thought I’d drop by and say hello since moms at work.”

“Do you mind watching the house while I’m gone?” My grandma asked.

“No its fine,” as I leisurely fell on the couch.

“Thanks, cookies are in the oven and the TV in the office is the only one that works. And watch those cookies for me, if you do a good job, maybe this could be your summer job,” As she put on her coat and left. The smell of the cookies was phenomenal. I turned on the TV, and after a while I thought to check on the cookies. When I went in the kitchen I could smell something burning. Smoke was coming out of the oven and the smoke alarm went off. I was freaking out running around, as it seemed every noise that could possibly go off was. I panicked and ran to the alarm and hit it a few times with a spatula but it wouldn’t go off. So I yanked off the cover and started snapping the wires. Finally I got it to go off so I turned my attention to the oven, the timer was going off and the cookies were about to flame up. I turned of the ovens and got about five oven mitts, picked up the cookies and threw them into the backyard. The smoke ruined my grandma’s paint, so I looked around for a picture or something. I had no luck so I left it be to fix later. I opened all the windows to let the air out. I tried to find some new cookie dough but I had to make more. About ten minutes have passed, I was scrambling around to make her house back to the way it was. I put the new cookies in the oven, but I didn’t know how long to bake them so I sifted through her recipes to find them. Sheets of paper were flying everywhere. I finally found it and baked the cookies. I peeked outside on the burnt cookies and there was a flock of crows surrounding them. There had to be twenty black, dirty crows fighting each other for the cookies I burnt. I tried to get the crows away, but they started to fight back so I let them be. I ran inside jumped on the couch and tried to act like nothing happened. I forgot about the stain on the wall I ran onto the kitchen and crows were coming in to the windows I had left open. I got a wooden spoon from the cupboard and started to run at the creature with anger. The creature made a noise and flew out of the window. I shut the windows, turned my attention to the stain on the wall. I could hear the sound of my grandma’s sixty-nine Camaro painted black. It had such a big engine you could hear it a mile away. She was very wealthy so she could afford stuff like that. I looked in the garage for paint and found the same color as on her wall. I slapped some on and hoped she wouldn’t notice. I ran in to her office and watched TV. She called me into the garage to help her with the food.

“Hi Joey, how’s the house?”

I didn’t know what to say. I didn’t want to lie but I needed money for a summer job and if she knew I would never have a chance to make some money.” Fine.” I said that with a great regret.

“Great, did you take the cookies out of the oven yet?”

” No I don’t think there done yet.”

“ Oh, they should. Ah, they still have about two minutes. So I guess I owe you some money?”

“Only if you want to.”

“How about I’ll give it to you after you clean up the mess you made.”

“How’d you know what happened?”

“The neighbor called and said he heard a ruckus and saw burnt cookies being thrown out of my house.”

“Oh, sorry grandma I didn’t mean to I just wasn’t paying attention to the cookies.” I looked at the ground shamefully.

“Kaka-kaka.”

“What’s that noise?” my grandma asked.

“I don’t know, I’ll check.” As I went to where the nose was coming from it got louder. It was crows that had gotten into the house.

” Did you figure out what the noise was Joey?”

“Ummm, no not yet.”

“Okay well just come back in to the kitchen I’m sure it’s nothing, as she put the groceries away.” I tried to steer the crows out of the house through the windows but there were too many. They were having frenzy in my grandma’s room. They were taking and knocking things over. They flooded into the house and all I could see was black as they started to attack.

who should decide which books

Some parents believe that they should be able to pick the reading material their children will read. After problems with filthily language in books people are having frustration with this epidemic. Some teachers are having trouble about what to do about this so parents won't get more mad. Parents want to pick parts of books for their child to read, some say if a book has ten bad words it shall be band. Some people think that if a teacher has a foul book on a reading list they should be dismissed from the school even.

Some people want to bleep out words in a book much like in TV but i think that's taking it to far. I mean its just a few bad words, sooner or later the kids are going to get exposed to them. I mean there just words in a book, its not going to scar them for life. Everyone has said a bad word and bleeping them out is just being a little overprotective, don't ya think? I think people are making more work for themselves by going through all these books just for a few years of school. And why are these words bad aren't all words the same, what makes them different?

The Last Spirit's Lesson

Monday December 14, 2009

Would you hate it if you ran out of money because you gave to much money away? What if you gave to much money to the homeless and then you became homeless because you couldn't pay your bills. Everyone should take care of themselves first and when you are healthy and have money to take care of you then you should give and help other people. So you should come first in your life and when you can give you need to, but not until you are able to. Some people will give when they don't have enough money and become homeless and take food from the food bank when they should have waited and saved up to give to charities. People should follow my philosophy because it will keep people from becoming homeless but at the same time help the homeless get back on their feet. So people do have the right to look out for number one.

A Christmas Carol

Scrooges diary
December 24,1843

today I was bugged my incompetent nephew who was trying to talk me into being jovial twords the holidays that i cannot bare to live through. People that try to cheer me up become my worst enemies. My clerk wanted to have the day off but i pay him too much for him to pick my pocket every year, he doesn't even do that much work for me. I will be the only one working in the Scrooge and Marley shop. Three Neanderthal men wanted me to donate to the hobos who live on the street. I donate to more important things like prisons, those are what we need to donate to. Christmas is not a time of giving its a fake holiday and everyone who celebrates it doesn't know what a real holiday is. I wish everyone didn't talk to me and ask me to give to preposterous charities just because its some holiday. Bah humbug to everyone , i have my money thats all I need.

Pearl symbolism

The pearl symbolizes hope that Coyotito will go to school and save his people from poverty and lack of education. It also symbolizes greed from the people who want to take the pearl from Kino.

In Kino it brings out fear, hope, and desire because he is now rich and can buy whatever he wants. I think it does because now he can have whatever he wants and before he didn't have any money.

In Jauna she wants to get rid of the pearl because she can see its tearing them apart. I think that because she wants to have the simple life they've always had.

In the neighbors it brings out curiosity about the pearl Kino found, and when Coyotito got bit by the scorpion. I think that because they follow Kino and Juana wherever they go.

It brings out greed in the doctor because before Kino had money he denied his request for help. But now that Kino has the pearl hes willing to help Kino.

It brings out greed in the priest also. Because he thinks of all the repairs the church needs when he sees the pearl and how much its worth.

In the townspeople it brings out jealousy. They start being mad because they think its unfair, and that they should have found the pearl of the world.
